An activist of Jubo League, Abdul Ali, 40, was shot dead by miscreants in the Companyganj upazila of Sylhet yesterday.
The Companyganj police station Officer-in-Charge Delwar Hossain said that Abdul was indiscriminately shot by some miscreants near Katakhal estuary while returning from Fedargaon to Katakhal village by boat yesterday evening.
Abdul who was severely injured was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead around 7:30pm.
He said the incident might have taken place following disputes over establishing supremacy in the area. After the incident residents of Katakhal village went into hiding.
The deceased was the son of late Abdul Monaf from Companyganj village. There were cases pending against him at Companyganj police station, he added.
Quoting sources in Jubo League, the OC said although Abdul was associated with Jubo League, he did not hold any position there.
