The communication between Dhaka and Sylhet has been interrupted when a faction of Brahmanbaria Juba League blockaded the highway, in protest of the dissolution of their committee.
The leaders and activists of the dissolved committee put a blockade at Ashuganj square near the Syed Nazrul Islam Bridge (Bhairab Bridge) in Brahmanbaria around 11:30am on Wednesday morning.
The blockade resulted in a half kilometre tailback on both sides of the point.
The central body recently dissolved the district committee as its tenure expired long ago and formed a convening committee in its place.
Monir Hossain, secretary of the last committee, said: “The committee was dissolved all of a sudden without any prior discussion with the existing committee.”
“We have sent police officials to the spot. They will talk to the protesters and ask them to leave the place,” said Ashuganj police station Officer-in-Charge Md Abu Zafar.
