Chhatra Dal gets new committee

Update : 14 Oct 2014, 09:45 PM

The BNP last night announced some of the names of the 201-strong new committee of its students’ wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, dropping many dedicated and regular students.

Even though President Rajib Ahsan and General Secretary Akramul Hasan are unmarried, there are at least 20 leaders who are married.

A press statement released yesterday, signed by BNP Student Affairs Secretary Sahiduddin Chowdhury Annie and endorsed by Chairperson Khaleda Zia, announced some of the new committee members’ names.

With this, student leaders allege that the dominance of former JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has been established since many of his followers have been inducted into the new committee.

Since February, Khaleda has said that a new committee would be formed with young and regular students and dedicated leaders. She also slammed student leaders at a recent meeting for their “poor performance” in the movement to resist the January 5 election.

The new Senior Vice-President Mamunur Rashid Mamun is married while Organising Secretary Ishak Sarker, aged around 48, is not a student, according to Chhatra Dal leader Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, who did not make it to the list.

The new president, Rajib, was the organising secretary of the previous committee and former president of Jasim Uddin Hall of Dhaka University.

Akramul was joint secretary of the previous committee and former president of Bangabandhu Hall of Dhaka University.

Apart from them, the names of 33 vice-presidents and 35 joint secretaries, 27 assistant secretaries and 28 assistant organising secretaries were also announced.

Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel and Habibur Rashid Habib were the president and general secretary, respectively, of the previous committee. Their terms expired on September 5.
