Campaigns have picked up speed ahead of the Awami League council to be held in Thakurgaon district on October 16. A council is supposed to be held every two years but it is being held around 10 years after it was held on May 22, 2005.
Be it a tea stall or some other gathering place, the imminent council has become the centrepiece of all discussions. Even cattle markets ahead of Eid and Durga puja mandaps were dominated by political discussions.
Thakurgaon Awami League President and Water Resources Minister and Thakurgaon 1 MP Ramesh Chandra Sen and Thakurgaon 2 MP Dabirul Islam have announced their own panels of candidates ahead of the council. Both Ramesh and Dabir fielded themselves as president candidate to the district Awami League committee.
District Awami League General Secretary and District Council Administrator Sadek Kuraishi and Thakurgaon Municipality Mayor SM Moeen are two general secretary candidates to the upcoming committee.
Sadek is on Ramesh-led panel while Moeen on Dabir’s panel.
Sadar upazila Awami League General Secretary Mosharul Islam said there will attend 170 councilors at the district council and they will elect the new committee.
Of the councilors, 140 each are chosen as councilors from 1400000 voters– 1 from every 10,000 voters – while 30 others are chosen from five upazilas and a municipality, he said.
The current committee came into question apparently for the first time after the party had performed badly in the last upazila polls and Ranisankail and Pirganj municipalities polls in the district.
Thakurgaon district Awami League unit’s acting president Mokbul Hossain Babu said the council is a democratic process. It makes a stronger unity in the party.
