PM: Latif himself is in trouble, not government

Update : 03 Oct 2014, 10:55 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said minister Latif Siddique is in trouble for his recent anti-Islamic comments, not the government.

The premier made the statement in response to a journalist's query during the question-answer session after briefing media about the outcomes of her recent visit to New York.

She said Latif Siddique's remark is not acceptable to anyone.

"I did not delay in taking decision for the action against minister Latif as soon as I heardabout the matter," she added.

She also said the government would take action against Latif Siddique as per rules.

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology minister Latif Siddique made derogatory remarks against hajj and Tablig Jamaat at a views-exchange meeting with expatriates from Tangail in New York on September 28.

The remarks made by Siddique, also presidium member of the Awami League, triggered widespread criticisms both at home and abroad, embarrassing the government.

The media briefing started at 4:50pm at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Sheikh Hasina said she presented Bangladesh's position on the effect of climate change.

The premier informed that she had called upon the developed countries to cooperate with Bangladesh in its efforts to minimise the effects of climate change.

She said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated Bangladesh government's fight against terrorism.

"Narendra Modi said he was aware about the risk of my life for the anti-terrorism battle," she added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has returned home on Thursday morning from London concluding her ten-day visit to USA and UK.

A VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Heathrow International Airport at 6.55pm (London time) and landed at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet around 9am.

On September 22, the prime minister went New York to attend the 69th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

From there she went London on September 29 on a private tour.
