Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman HM Ershad finally announced two full-fledged convening committees – one for Rangpur district and another for Rangpur city corporation yesterday.
The chairman announced the 127-member Rangpur district committee with Mofazzal Hossain as the convener and Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif as the member secretary.
He declared 118-member committee for Rangpur city with Mustafizur Rahmam Mustafa as the convenor and SM Yeasin as its member secretary.
Earlier on September 9, Ershad, while sticking to the post of special envoy to the prime minister, had asked his party’s all three cabinet members to resign.
None of the three resigned. Rather, he faced criticism by Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister for Local Government Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Chief Whip of the Opposition Tajul Islam Chowdhury over such an order.
Only a day after their criticism, Ershad relieved Ranga and Tajul from their presidium duties.
Ranga was also removed from the post of president of JaPa’s Rangpur district and city corporation committees, while Tajul was removed as the president of JaPa’s Kurigram district committee.
This was, however, not the first time the two leaders faced punitive actions from Ershad; they were both expelled by Ershad on two previous occasions but were later brought back to the party both times.
After removing Tajul and Ranga from the party posts on September 10, Ershad had also announced the dissolution of the party’s Rangpur city and district and Kurigram district committees on the same day.
