Five people sustained injuries as two rival groups of the Awami League locked into a clash during a programme of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at Rajoir Upazila Parishad in Madaripur.
A motorcycle has also been torched during the factional clash that was triggered at 11:30am on Saturday.
Witnesses said President of Awami League Rajoir Upazila unit Motaleb Molla has a long standing dispute with Local Awami League leader and Bajitpur UP Chairman Sirajul Islam Hawlade over formation of the union unit of the Awami League committee.
The supporters of both the ruling party leaders have already clashed with each other over the issue a few days back.
They locked into a clash again on Saturday morning, immediately after the shipping minister entered the upazila parishad premises to attend “disseminating the fund for Durga Puja” programme, said locals.
Five people of Sirajul group sustained injuries during the clash. Of the injured, one Harun's condition is stated to be critical.
While contacted, Bajitpur UP Chairman Sirajul Islam Hawlade told the Dhaka Tribune that Motaleb’s men attacked his supporters, leaving five people injured.
On the other hand, Motaleb Molla denied the allegation and said his people did not attack Sirajul's supporters.
“Sirajul may have personal enmity with someone and the group attacked his men.”
The protocol police, who were accompanying the minister during the programme, took the situation under control.
