Upon assurance from the mayor and leaders of the BNP city unit, the discontented leaders of Sylhet Chhatra Dal have refrained from resigning.
Earlier they gave a three day ultimatum to dissolve the newly formed committees of Sylhet district and city units of Chhatra Dal.
Yesterday, on the last day of the ultimatum, the agitated leaders took position in front of the Malancha Community Centre in Kumarpara area of the city.
With the slogan “remove Shibir, save Chhatra Dal”, the leaders condemned the members who were appointed to different posts of the newly formed committees.
While they were preparing to resign the BNP city unit leaders arrived at the spot and tamed the agitated crown.
Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Ariful Haque Chowdhury said resignation was not a solution. He requested them not to resign and assured that their demands would be placed to the chairperson of the party.
The possibility for forming a new committee with coordination from all the members would be discussed, he said.
“Getting assurance form the senior leaders, the Chhatra Dal leaders had halted their move of resigning for the time being,” said former organising secretary of Chhatra Dal district unit Mahbubul Haque Chowdhury.
Co-chair of the recently dissolved Chhatra Dal district unit Abdul Ahad Khan Jamal said the new committees were formed by instigation of a group with Shibir men and inactive people from different professions.
On Thursday the new committee of Sylhet district and city units of Chhatra Dal were announced with Sayeed Ahmed and Rahat Chowdhury Munna as the president and general secretary respectively of the district committee, while Nurul Alam Siddiqui Khaled and Abu Saleh Md Lokman were appointed president and general secretary respectively of the city committee.
The Chhatra Dal activists marched in the city on Thursday night, hours after the new committees were announced. They chanted slogans against the new committees and blasted crude bombs.
