Jamaat's hartal underway peacefully

The 24-hour nationwide hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the SC verdict that sentenced party Nayeb-e-Ameer Delawar Hossain Sayedee to imprisonment until death, is underway peacefully on Sunday.

The hartal began at 6am and it will end at 6am on Monday.

Vehicular movement is normal in the capital city. No unpleasant incident is yet to be reported till updating of this story at 11am.

The activists of Jamaat and Shibir brought out processions in Kafrul and Pallabi areas of the capital. But, police barred their processions and dispersed them.

Jamaat’s acting Ameer Mokbul Ahmed and its acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, in a joint statement, declared the strike, immediately after the verdict was pronounced on Wednesday.

On September 17, the Supreme Court in the appeals case of Delawar Hossain Sayedee handed down imprisonment until natural death overturning the death sentence given by the tribunal.

On 28 February 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) awarded death penalty to the top Jamaat leader for committing crimes against humanity during the Independence War in 1971.
