Jamaat-e-Islami has called countrywide hartal on Thursday and Sunday in protest against the Appellate Division’s verdict that awarded its leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee imprisonment until death.
Jamaat’s Acting Ameer Mokbul Ahmed and Acting Secretary General Shafiqur Rahman in a joint statement announced the hartal immediately after the verdict was pronounced.
According to the statement, the hartal will be enforced from 6 am on Thursday to 6 am on Friday and from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Monday.
The statement reads: “Sayedee has been a victim of this government’s oppression. He has been victimised today as the country’s highest court has deprived him of getting justice in a false case filed by the government.” The party also announced a special prayers on Friday and agitation on Saturday.
Meanwhile, law enforcers remain on high alert so that no untoward incident could take place anywhere in the country.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, state minister for home, told the Dhaka Tribune that law enforcers were asked to take necessary steps so that no one could create anarchy in the name of hartal.
Check posts have already been set up at all key points in the capital and other districts. A huge number of intelligence officials also remain on alert. Along with regular security arrangement, the law enforcers have kept an eye on Facebook and other internet pages run by Jamaat aiming to stop any kind of violence.
