A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Yunus Khan issued the arrest warrant in a case of arson and vandalism filed in December 2012.

Md Anisur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the Dhaka Tribune: “Although Mirza Fakhrul was not initially named in the case detail, he was later included in the charge sheet upon finding evidence of his involvement.”

Arrest warrant was also issued against two local BNP activists – Md Ali and Nasir Hossain – of Kadamtali area in the capital, Anisur said.

Kadamtali police station Sub-inspector (SI) Md Abu Azif filed the case against 77 named and 20-25 unnamed.

It was alleged that these BNP activists torched an oil tanker near Eagle Box Factory beside Postagola-Narayanganj Highway in December 2012, on the day of their blockade programme.

It also said, at that time, the accused also hurled bricks on the law enforcers.

Investigation officer of the case, Sub-inspector Zahid Khan, filed the charge sheet against 61 including Mirza Fakhrul on January 16 this year.

Mirza Fakhrul was found to have provoked the BNP activists to carry out the violence and vandalism, according to the charge sheet.
