Unknown miscreants physically assaulted former Dhaka University (DU) Prof Mahbub Ullah yesterday while he was on his way to attend a function of pro-BNP engineers at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Clad in a torn shirt, the injured professor arrived at the programme when BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was speaking as the chief guest.
Seeing him, Khaleda said to the audience: “Can you see what they have done to a professor? I want to tell Sheikh Hasina to take responsibility for these attacks.”
“If those who launched attacks on Prof Mahbub Ullah today are not arrested, it means that the attacks have been carried out at the behest of Sheikh Hasina,” she said.
Condemning the incident the BNP chief demanded immediate arrest of the attackers.
“This incident proves that there is people in the country have no security. Life and properties of none are secured now,” she added.
Mahbub was later admitted to the Labaid Hospital in the capital.
The professor came under the attack after attending a book publication ceremony at the Supreme Court.
He said four to five youths had pushed him to the ground and started beating when he came out of the ceremony.
The attackers had fled the scene when others came to his rescue, he said.
“I am a teacher. I have no enemies. I talk only as much as is necessary. Today I want a neutral probe into these attacks. I demand that the attackers be punished,” said the former DU faculty.
