Ruling Awami League, which in January discouraged some independent lawmakers from joining the party and to play the role of opposition in parliament, has got three more MPs raising the number of the party strength to 279 in the 350-strong legislature.
Three independent lawmakers elected from the women’s reserved seats – Quazi Rosy, Nurjahan Begum and Ummey Razia Kajol – have joined the Awami League. On August 31, the Parliament Secretariat sent a letter to the Election Commission confirming their joining.
“We sent the letter to the Election Commission mainly to inform them [about the development],” Ashraful Maqbul, the parliament secretary, told the Dhaka Tribune.
