Students residing in Chittagong University’s Shah Amanat and Suhrawardi Hall have threatened to enforce a strike on campus from Sunday demanding reopening of residential halls, which were closed following a clash between two political student bodies.
Under the banner of “General Student of CU,” the protesting student also served a 72-hour ultimatum to the university authorities to reopen the dormitories.
Asiqur Rahman, spokesperson of the platform, said the authorities have pushed the students into immense hardship by holding the scheduled examination on time when two of its dormitories were closed following clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir on the campus.
“If our demands are not met by Saturday, we would enforce the strike at the campus from Sunday. If needed, we will blockade the campus-bound shuttle train and connecting roads to create pressure on authorities,” he added.
Terming the students as Shibir men, CU Proctor Siraj Ud Dowla told Dhaka Tribune that the university will take legal steps to uphold a congenial educational atmosphere on the campus.
Connected, Mustafizur Rahman, president of CU Shibir, denied their involvement with the students’ movement, however, he said Shibir would express their solidarity in the sake of general students’ interest.
University authorities had closed the Suhrawardi Hall after a gunfight took place between BCL and Shibir on 24 August.
The Shah Amanat Hall was closed since January 12 after an emergency meeting of CU after another fierce clash of BCL and ISC that left Mamun Hossain, a 4th year student of Soil Science also the Hall unit president of Shibir, dead.
