A Dhaka court yesterday indicted 154 leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir in a case filed for torching and vandalising vehicles and attempted murder of policemen in the capital last year.

Three former presidents of Jamaat’s student body Islami Chhatra Shibir – Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, Delwar Hossain alias Sayeedi and Fakhruddin Manik – are among the accused.

Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Tareq Mainul Islam Bhuiyan of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 6 framed the charges and fixed October 12 for starting trial of the case, filed under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act on February 13 last year.

The court also cancelled the bails of 78 accused and issued arrest warrants against them as they had not appeared before the court yesterday.

Masud and Delwar were present in court. Of those on bail, 60 were present during the hearing while 16 others are absconding since the filing of the case.

According to the charge sheet, the members of Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir on February 13 last year resorted to physical assault and attack on police and rampaged in different parts of the capital.

The attacks were made with handmade bombs after they had been barred from holding violent processions to demand the release of Delawar Hossain Sayedee who is on trial for committing war crimes.

The activists also attacked police in Shapla Chattor, Dainik Bangla intersection, Fakirerpool and Motijheel areas.

During the attacks, many members of police and general people were injured. Of them, Agrani Bank’s Motijheel branch lift man Jakir Munshi was critically injured, says the charge sheet.

SI Habibur Rahman of Motijheel police submitted the charge sheet on February 25 mentioning 162 persecution witnesses.
