CUJA protests BCL leader’s death threat to fellow journalist

Update : 24 Aug 2014, 07:15 PM

Members of Chittagong University Journalists’ Association (CUJA) formed a human chain on the university campus yesterday in protest of the death threat that a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader gave to CUJA’s General Secretary Tasnim Hasan.

They formed the human chain in front of the university’s administrative building around 1pm demanding the expulsion of Ashrafuzzaman Asha, a Master’s student at the botany department and the former deputy cultural affairs secretary of Chhatra League’s CU unit.

Speaking at the human chain, the CUJA leaders said the Chhatra League activists were creating disorder in the campus, making the environment unstable.

The “rowdy” members of the ruling party’s student wing, who are very small in number on the campus, are unruly and abuse their position and power on the campus, and the university authorities fail to take any stern action against these identified “assaulters”, they said.

The CUJA leaders also submitted a memorandum to the CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Anwarul Azim Arif that stated their three-point demand, including immediate expulsion of Asha within the next three days.

The vice-chancellor received the memorandum at his office and assured the CUJA leaders that stern measures would be taken against the student in this regard.

CU Proctor Siraj Ud Dowla said a show-cause notice had been issued against Asha to explain his role within three days.

Asha threatened Tasnim with death on Thursday as Tasnim reported the recent attack on police by Chhatra League members.

Tasnim filed a general dairy with Hathazari police station in this regard on Saturday.
