The wife of slain Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam won in yesterday's by-election for the post of ward 2 councillor under Narayanganj City Corporation.
Nazrul's wife Selina Islam Beauty defeated her main opponent Iqbal Hossain by bagging 5,266 votes. Iqbal got 1,958 votes.
Returning Officer and District Election Officer Md Tarifuzzaman announced the unofficial result around 7pm at the Narayanganj district administration office.
The post fell vacant after the killing of ruling party leader Nazrul, along with six others in late April.
Vote casting started in the morning and ended at 4pm amid tight security measures at the eight centres of the ward where the number of voters was 16,729.
The ward comprises Shiddhirganj's Mijimiji, Painadi, Mouchak, Notun Moholla, Abdul Ali pool, Hirajheel, Mujibbagh and Mitali Market areas.
Even though the candidates had earlier alleged plots to rig votes, yesterday afternoon both said they were happy with the overall situation.
A huge number of police and RAB personnel were deployed in the polling areas to keep things under control.
Nazrul and six others were abducted in Narayanganj on April 27. Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya after a couple of days.
