Fakhrul: Govt is hatching conspiracy to keep BNP away from politics

Update : 23 Aug 2014, 08:15 PM

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday alleged that the government was now hatching a conspiracy to keep his party away from politics and also elections.

“The government is filing false cases one after another against Khaleda Zia. Cases were filed also against Tarique Rahman. Now, they have been included in the August 21 grenade attack case. The purpose of this is just to keep the BNP from the politics,” the party spokesman said while addressing a programme at National Press Club marking Mahmudur Rahman’s 500th day in jail.

He also claimed that the government had also curbed the people’s freedom of speech.

“Our right to stage demonstration has also been snatched away. Now, permissions need to be taken to hold in-house discussions. The government is even set to curtail the freedom of the media by implementing the broadcast policy,” he added.

Regarding the lawmakers authority to impeach the Supreme Court judges, Fakhrul said: “The government has giving back the authority to the parliament to impeach judges. The government is giving back power to the parliament which does not represent the people’s mandate.”

The BNP leader also alleged that the government had not only politicised the administration, but also the judiciary too.

Condemning the August 21 grenade attack, Fakhrul said: “We had condemned the attack then and we condemn it now too. But, the government is implicating Tarique Rahman to mislead the countrymen.”

Claiming that militancy rose during the Awami League government, he further added: “BNP does not believe in militancy and does not support militancy. Militancy had risen during the Awami League government and we took action to evict it.”
