Update : 07 Aug 2014, 09:43 PM

A Dhaka Court yesterday took cognisance of charges against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and the party’s standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas and 38 others in two cases filed for assaulting police and torching vehicles on March 2 last year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman accepted the charges after scrutinising the dockets in the cases filed against the 41 BNP men.

On August 5, the Detective Branch of police submitted two separate charge sheets in the case to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

One of the charge sheets accused the BNP leaders of assaulting police, torching vehicles and preventing lawmen from discharging their duties. The other brought charges of hurling crude bombs at the police on March 2 last year.

Names appearing on the second charge sheet include BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Aman Ullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal and General Secretary Saiful Alam Nirob, among others.

The cases were filed with Ramna police station for obstructing law enforcers from discharging their duties, attempting to kill them and hurling crude bombs to create panic in front of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Bailey Road of the capital on March 2, 2013, during a BNP-led agitation programme.
