A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders vandalised the estate department office at the registrar building of Chittagong University yesterday.
According to witnesses, the vandalism was triggered after an altercation ensued between Deputy Registrar Zaker Hossain of CU estate department and Md Nazim, a Master’s student of the Anthropology Department and a BCL activist, regarding a rented house of one late Nasir, who had worked at CU College at the campus.
The deputy registrar told Dhaka Tribune that a group of three Chhatra League men, led by Mamun Hossain, former athletics affairs secretary of CU unit, entered the estate office around 12pm and asked them to evict the inhabitants of the house, claiming that the house was a secured shelter of Shibir men.
“At one point of the altercation, they started to vandalise the tables, chairs and computers of the office and threatened us of dire consequences,” Zaker said.
Being informed, the proctor and pro-vice chancellor came to the office but the Chhatra League men had managed to fled the scene, he added.
Zaker said following the vandalism, he had lodged a written complaint with the registrar’s office accusing the three BCL men. He said he would file another complaint with Hathazari police station regarding the incident.
Professor Siraj Uddowla, proctor of CU, said he had received a verbal complaint from the deputy registrar in this regard, adding that they would sit in a meeting today with the authorities concerned and the BCL men to solve the matter.
