Fakhrul: Awami League bankrupt, abandoned

Update : 06 Jul 2014, 06:55 PM

The BNP yesterday alleged that the ruling Awami League had gone politically bankrupt and were abandoned by the people after the “controversial” January 5 election.

“The government has lost its ground. The ruling party has gone bankrupt so badly that it can no longer face politics with politics,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of BNP.

Addressing a gathering at the National Press Club in the capital, Fakhrul said human rights had been violated at every step in the country.

The BNP spokesperson, quoting a newspaper, claimed that 29 people were injured in gunshots in just one district in the name of so-called “gunfights.”

“A total of 46 opposition leaders and activists were killed in Laxmipur,” he alleged.

This time, he came up with a new figure saying 310 people were killed in two months right after the January 5 election and 32 were abducted.

“It would be tough to identify a single house across the country which is not in mourning,” he said.

Fakhrul said not only the opposition men but also the rights bodies are being victims of repression of the government.

“Odhikar Secretary Adilur Rahman was repressed. Even TIB and Sujan were also harassed.”

Countering Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu’s statement that Khaleda Zia patronised militancy, Fakhrul said: “It is a dangerous statement. We want to warn that if anything happens to Khaleda Zia, the government will have to shoulder the responsibility.”

The BNP leader also claimed AL members were afraid of Tarique Rahman and that was why AL members were spreading baseless allegations against him.
