The ruling Awami League has bankrupted politically and turned into an abandoned party after January 5 ‘controversial’ election, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
The BNP leader made the allegation while addressing a citizen gathering at the National Press Club in the capital on Sunday.
Swadhinata Forum organised the programme to mark the third year of police repression on party leader Jainul Abdin Farroque.
“The government has lost its ground. The ruling party has bankrupted in such a way that it cannot face politics in a political manner. Awami League has turned into an abandoned party after January 5 election,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
He said human rights have been violated in every step in the country.
Referring to the different newspaper reports, the party spokesperson said one newspaper reported that in the name of a so-called gunfight, 29 were hurt in gun shots in a district.
“46 opposition leaders and activists were killed in Lakshmipur,” he alleged.
The BNP leader came up with a new figure saying 310 people were killed in two months just after the January 5 election and 32 were abducted.
“It would be tough to identify a single house across the country where wailing was not heard.”
Mentioning the repression on the right bodies, Fakhrul said not only the opposition people but the right bodies are being victims of repression of the government.
“Odhikar secretary Adilur Rahman was repressed. Even TIB and Sujan were also harassed.”
Countering the Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu’s statement that Khaleda Zia is the patroniser of militancy and she has to go.
“It is a dangerous statement. We want to warn that if anything happens on Deshnetri (Khaleda), the government has to shoulder the responsibility on BNP.”
The BNP leader said many of the ruling party leaders’ speeches hinted that they afraid of Tarique Rahman and that’s why they have been propagating against him as they failed to prove a single allegation.
