Jatiya Party-backed candidate Selim Osman and former MP SM Akram are expected to be the chief contenders in Narayanganj 5 by-election scheduled for June 26.
This became clear yesterday, when City AL President Anwar Hossain withdrew his nomination paper as an independent candidate. The AL has not fielded any candidate in the by-election.
Though Krishak Sramik Janata League Central Committee Joint General Secretary Iqbal Siddique also withdrew himself as a candidate, his name had not figured as a contender in the upcoming election.
The four candidates, who will contest this election, would get their election symbols today, said Narayanganj Election Officer Tariquzzaman, also confirming that Anwar and Iqbal had withdrawn their nominations. On April 29, Narayanganj 5 MP Nasim Osman died, leaving the constituency vacant.
