A senior ruling party leader has alleged that compensation funds were not properly distributed among the victims of the Rana Plaza tragedy.
“The compensation money was not distributed properly among the affected families and rehabilitation activities have not been handled right. Even foreign funds were not distributed equally,” Suranjit Sengupta, a member of Awami League’s advisory committee, said while addressing a discussion, organised by Bangabandu Academy, in the capital yesterday.
Earlier, BNP had questioned the transparency in disbursing the compensation funds collected from different organisations, including some international groups and garments businesses.
Suranjit, a former minister, proposed forming a monitoring cell under the leadership of the labour minister to protect the interest of workers.
“It is necessary to allow workers to form trade unions,” he said.
He also urged immediate action for rehabilitation of the Rana Plaza victims through coordination of factory owners and the government.
Meanwhile, terming BNP’s recent long march towards the Teesta barrage as a political stunt, Suranjit claimed that the former opposition party did not want a Teesta water-sharing agreement with India.
“You have not been able to do anything for the people of the county through riding vehicles in the name of long march. You failed to involve the people and your aim did not succeed,” he said.
Suranjit added that the Awami League had never done any deal compromising the state’s interest, and would not do so in future.
