CPB, SPB road march to Teesta Barrage starts today

Update : 16 Apr 2014, 06:58 PM

Protesting the “weak foreign policy” of the ruling AL and demanding proper shares of the Teesta River water from India, the Communist Party of Bangladesh and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh are going to start their road march towards Teesta Barraage together from the capital today.

In a Tuesday press briefing, CPB and SPB announced the 3-day road march programme.

As per the announcement, the activists of the parties are supposed to hold a rally in front of the National Press Club before starting the march around 3pm.

On the way, they will hold roadside rallies in different areas of Gazipur, Tangail and Bogra before stopping over at Sirajganj for the night.

On the second day, the march will leave the district for Rangpur, holding similar rallies on the way and on the final day they will hold a concluding rally at Shadubazar in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat.

In the briefing, the leaders of the parties said the Indian government has no rights to withdraw water unilaterally from any river common to both countries.

They opined that due to the subservient foreign policy of the incumbent government, India has dared to do this.

SPB general secretary Khalequzzaman, said there are 54 common rivers flowing through Bangladesh and India, and the latter government has been obstructing the water flow of those rivers by building barrages upstream in violation of international river laws.

Consequently, vast areas of the greater Rangpur, Dinajpur and Bogra are gradually becoming barren and cultivation is being hampered severely, he claimed.
