The Health and Family Planning Minister, Mohammad Nasim, has requested State Minister for Home Affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan, to take immediate action against the people allegedly involved with the chaotic incident at Capital’s BIRDEM Hospital.

The Heath Minister made the urgent call over telephone on Tuesday just minutes after a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) over Sunday’s messy incidents at BIRDEM concerning a patient’s death which smeared assault on duty doctors and triggered vandalism in the hospital.

BMA President Professor Dr Mahmud Hasan and General Secretary Dr M Iqbal Arslan led the BMA team.

The junior home minister said his ministry is quite concerned about the matter. He assured the health minister that action shall be taken soon against the people involved.

Doctors of Ibrahim Memorial Hospital (BIRDEM) have gone on strike since Tuesday morning protesting the attack on their colleagues by the relatives of a patient who died on Sunday.

The doctors also formed a human chain at Shahbagh intersection from 11am to 11:30am.

BIRDEM Director Dr Nazmun Nahar told the Dhaka Tribune that outdoor services in the hospital remained suspended since morning.

On Sunday, a gang of 50 to 60 people, directed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police ASP Masum and a former minister’s APS Babu, beat up three doctors following a death of patient of ward no 132 at around 8pm. They got severely injured in the incident, the doctors said in a written statement.

They demand immediate arrest of the ASP and APS and treatment of the injured doctors.
