Activists of Bangladesh Chattra League, ruling party’s student wing, of Jahangirnagar University unit put barricade on Dhaka-Aricha highway yesterday protesting against the arrest of one of its leaders by the police.
Sources said Mithun Kundu, a joint secretary of the unit, beat up an employee of a shoe store, Avanti Shoes, at Savar City Center market.
Being informed, a team of Savar police led by Assistant Police Superintendent Shafiqul Islam rushed to the spot and tried to settle the matter amicably.
However, the police detained Mithun as he had engaged in an altercation with them and took him to the police station.
The activists of Rafiq-Zabbar hall loyal to Kundu put the barricade on the highway around 2:40pm causing a huge traffic jam on the important road.
They men also stopped Dhaka-bound army vehicles of the Savar Cantonment.
The barricade was withdrawn after Mithun had been released following the intervention of the JU proctorial team in the afternoon.
The owner of the shop, Jalal Uddin, said: “There was some misunderstanding. We have settled the issue.” He was absent at the time of the incident.
The ASP said: “We went to the shop as the owner asked for help. Later,
the matter was solved through negotiation with the police and the university authorities.”
