Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has termed Bangladesh Nationalist Party as an illegal party as it was founded by a military ruler who captured state power illegally.
Hasina, who is also the Awami League chief, said this while addressing the newly elected Upazila Parishad Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and female Vice Chairmen who met her at her official residence Ganobhaban on Saturday afternoon, reported BSS.
Referring to the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and top BNP leaders, Hasina also said: “It was unfortunate for the people to hear theories about the country’s history of independence from those who belong to an unlawful party.”
She said BNP chairperson, her son and Jamaat could not accept the victory of Bangladesh achieved in 1971 through a bloody war.
That’s why, they are trying to confuse people through absurd theories.
Hasina said: “The upazila Parishad election was held in a free, fair and neutral manner as there were winning candidates from AL, BNP and Jamaat.”
Our aim is to decentralize the government by further strengthening the local government bodies giving them more power, she added.
