Suranjit: Khaleda, Tarique should face sedition charges

Update : 11 Apr 2014, 09:59 PM

Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has said the Home Ministry should file sedition case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman on charges of violating the constitution by claiming that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first illegal prime minister of Bangladesh.

“This is a seditious remark and the Home Ministry has to file sedition case against them for the sake of the constitution’s sanctity. It not to be done that the Law is existing but application is not so,” Suranjit Sen, also member of Awami League advisory body, said yesterday while addressing a discussion at the auditorium of Institute of Diploma Engineers of Bangladesh (IDEB) in the capital.

Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion with independent MP Haji Mohammad Selim in the chair.

The AL leader said if it was not possible to file case against the two under the Code of Criminal Procedure, it might be resolved through presidential ordinance.

Suranjit also urged Khaleda and Tarique, also the party’s Senior Vice-Chairman, to apologise to the nation, saying: “If Tarique’s remark was an expression of his ignorance or stupidity then they should offer an apology to the nation. Otherwise, the matter should be resolved through legal procedures.”

The BNP is telling lies one after another in order to destroy the country’s history, he observed.

“Tarique earlier said his father announced our independence and now is terming Bangabandhu illegal president. I think there is a big conspiracy behind his comment,” the AL leader said, adding that if it could not be handled now, it would get worse over time.
