Awami League MPs slam Tarique

Update : 11 Apr 2014, 04:17 AM

Awami League lawmakers yesterday slammed BNP leader Tarique Rahman for his remark that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was first illegal prime minister of Bangladesh.

They urged the government to take legal action against Tarique, the BNP senior vice-chairman, as early as possible for the sake of the country’s liberty and sovereignty.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed termed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman an idiot.

Training his gun on Tarique, Tofail said seething with anger: “What a foolish…Was your father an elected representative?  Did he see the election? Your father used to spew spit calling us sir.”

Tarique at a rally in London on April 8 said Bangabandhu was first illegal prime minister of Bangladesh. Earlier, at another program he claimed that Ziaur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh.

Slating Tarique Zia’s remark, Tofail Ahmed, also an advisory council member of the Awami League, urged the prime minister and the law minister to end the grenade attack case as early as possible.

Tarique is an accused in the case of grenade attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004.

Senior AL lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta said BNP was working as part of a political conspiracy. “Tarique Zia is talking in a way that he appeared to have been taught by the ISI [Pakistan’s intelligence agency].”

Suranjit urged the law minister to take legal action against Tarique on charge of sedition and for destroying the history of the country.

He said those who do not recognise the history of Bangladesh have no right to live in the country.

“If anyone want to live in the county must show respect to the constitution and liberation of the country,” he said.

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim claimed that BNP was distorting the history of Bangladesh as part of a plot. He urged the government to be stern against those who are destroying the history of Bangladesh.

Nasim, also the presidium member of Awami League, admitted the fact of violence in the upazila election saying that some incidents were seen during the election.

Railway Minister Mujibul Haque said the countrymen were surprised at the remark of Tarique Rahman on Bangabandhu.

“Tarique Zia is betraying with the country taking money from the ISI,” he said.
