Update : 10 Apr 2014, 06:03 PM

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir died yesterday during a clash with ruling Awami League supporters at Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj.

The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 30, son of Jamaat supporter Jasim Uddin of the Upazila’s Chardhulghagrakhali village.

Jamaat-Shibir have called half-a-day strike on Sunday protesting the killing in the district.

Quoting locals and witnesses, Belkuchi police station officer-in-charge Abdul Hye Sarcar said that over 100 Jamaat-Shibir men from Kalyanpur and the surrounding villages held a showdown at Chardhulghagrakhali village, where people mainly support the Awami League, around 11am on Wednesday.

They were armed with sticks and home-made weapons, he said, adding that as the news spread to the Awami League men, they attacked several Jamaat-Shibir activists in the same village.

Jamaat-Shibir men later informed their fellows of the attack through mics and then the Jamaat-Shibir men of Kalyanpur and surrounding villages tried to enter the Chardhulghagrakhali village and attack the Awami League men in the village.

The Awami League men blocked them, triggering a violent clash, leaving one critically injured.

Shibir activist Hossain was critically injured and died on the way to the Upazila health complex around 2am on Thursday.

The body was then taken to Sirajganj General Hospital for autopsy.

Sirajganj Jamaat secretary Shahidul Islam said they called a half-day strike on Sunday, protesting against the killing and the attack on them by the ruling party men.

Meanwhile yesterday, Shibir men attacked police with cocktails as the police tried to abort a sabotage staged by Jamaat’s student wing beside Sakhipur KBA College playground in Satkhira’s Debhata Upazila,

forcing them to fire at the attacking Shibir men.

KBA College Shibir leader Milon Hossain Sohagh received bullet injuries and two police constables – Akbar Ali and Hafiz Uddin – were injured during the clash.

The two police constables and Sohagh, under police guard, were treated at the Satkhira General Hospital, said Debhata police station officer-in-charge Kazi Jalal Uddin Ahmed.

Police have been deployed to avoid any untoward incidents in the Sirajganj area.
