War criminal Sayedee’s son takes oath

Update : 10 Apr 2014, 01:21 PM

The son of convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Masud bin Sayedee, has taken an oath as the chairman of Zianagar upazila on Thursday, two-weeks after he won the poll.

The oath taking ceremony took place at the Barisal divisional commissioner's office in the afternoon.

Dulal Talukdar, Barisal district election officer, said: “Md Gawus, divisional commissioner of Barisal district, administered the oath to eight chairmen, eight male and eight female vice-chairmen of eight upazilas under Pirojpur, Barisal and Bhola districts.”

Death row war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee’s son has emerged victorious as a candidate for chairman by a huge margin in March 24 polls at the Zianagar Upazila Parishad in Pirojpur.

Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Masud-bin-Sayedee clinched 21,152 votes with his pen-and-ink symbol, toppling his nearest contender Awami League-backed Abdul Khalek Gazi, who got only 6,522 votes.

During campaign, Masud sought justice from the voters claiming that his father was wronged by the Awami League government. He also highlighted the role of his father, who had been a lawmaker in the area in the past, in developing the upazila.

Sayedee was sentenced to the death penalty for committing crime against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
