Update : 10 Apr 2014, 04:07 AM

A Jamaat-e-Islami supporter has died and at least 10 others injured in clashes with ruling Awami League supporters in Belcuci upazila, Sirajganj.

The dead has been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 30, son of Jamaat supporter Jashim Uddin Buddur in the upazila, according to police.

Two Awami League supporters have been detained over the incident. Police have recovered the body when this report was filed on Thursday morning.

Belcuci police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hai said the clash took place in Doulatpur union early on Thursday. He endorsed the casualty.

Ruling party supporters sought revenge over the attacks carried out by Jamaat men after the execution of their leader Abdul Quader Molla, locals said.

Several people, mostly Jamaat supporters, were injured when the two parties clashed with local weapons after Wednesday midnight, they said.

They said Jamaat supporter Alamgir died on the way to a local health complex around 2am. Police rushed to the spot and contained situation.

Belcuci Awami League President AKM Yousufzi Khan said the area is a stronghold of the Jamaat. “They attacked in the night, what caused casualties.”

District Jamaat Secretary Shahidul Islam said ruling party supporters attacked in two phases. “Alamgir died when we tried to resist them.”

However, Belcuci OC Abdul Hai said the incident might not be related to Jamaat atrocities in the area after execution of Quader Molla.

“We are suspecting that the incident was triggered from an altercation between some youths,” he said. “Two people have been detained.”

The two detained Awami League supporters were Rubel Rana, 25, son of Abdur Razzak, and Mhammad Amin Uddin, 24, son of Habibur Rahman.

No case was filed until this report was filed on Thursday morning.
