‘Election Commission should be impeached’

Update : 05 Apr 2014, 08:05 PM

BNP Standing Committee Member Rafiqul Islam Miah yesterday said the Election Commission “should be impeached” through a supreme judicial council for “violating” constitution.

“The constitution said the commission could comprise one or more and one of them could be the chief election commissioner; but it said nothing about an ‘acting’ chief election commissioner... There is no legal base of appointing Abdul Mobarak as the acting chief election commissioner.

“We think that the commission has become illegal. To investigate their illegal activities, a judicial probe committee should be formed. So, I think the incumbent Election Commission should be impeached through a supreme judicial council,” he said.

Addressing a discussion at the National Press Club in the capital, the BNP leader said election officials, ruling party leaders and the EC had jointly destroyed the electoral and democratic processes.

Criticising the government for awarding power transmission corridor to India, Miah alleged that it was meant to serve only the ruling party’s interest.

“The power secretary said costs and benefits were not analysed. Why then was the corridor given?” he inquired.

At the same programme, Jafarullah Chowdhury, founder of Ganashasthya Kendra, slammed BNP for not practicing democracy within its ranks.

“Why can the BNP not practice democracy in choosing leaders? Why do they have to look upon former bureaucrats?”- was his question.

Chowdhury also said if Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman read history before making statements, then there would have been no problems.

“We fought the Liberation War under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s leadership,” he said.
