Chhatra League no more with Gonojagoron

Update : 05 Apr 2014, 08:00 PM

The Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday said the organisation was ready to make an apology if the allegation brought against them by members of Gonojagoron Moncho is proved true.

“Otherwise, they (Gonojagoron Moncho) will have to apologise for filing false cases against Chhatra League,” BCL President Badiuzzaman Sohag said while speaking at a press conference yesterday.

Gonojagoron Moncho filed a case with Shahabag Police Station on Thursday night accusing Chhatra League activists Sheikh Asman and Nasim Al Momin Rupok of assaulting activists of the platform.

“Once the Gonojagoron movement represented the demands of the people, but now it is totally separated from the masses” Siddique Nazmul Alam, secretary general of BCL central committee, said at the press conference.

“It was Chhatra League who had saved Gonojagoron Moncho from fundamentalists in the past. We always stood by the Moncho when Hefazat and Jamat-e-Islami attempted to attack its activists on May 5 2013,” BCL President Badiuzzaman Sohag told reporters.

“We have no differences with the spirit of Gonojagoron Moncho, but the Moncho has become isolated from the people.”

Alam alleged that the Moncho was spending huge sums, received from some anti-government bodies and NGOs for its programmes, but was unsuccessful in achieving anything.

Meanwhile, Muktijoddha Shongshod Shontan Command (MSSC), considered a fraction of the Gonojagoron Moncho, said Moncho spokesperson Imran H Sarker has been “expelled” and was “unwanted” by the platform.

Jagroto Jonota Joint Convener Habibullah Mesbah announced the “expulsion” through a press conference held at the Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen yesterday.

On Friday, the two factions (Gonojagoron and MSSC) were prevented by law enforcers from holding simultaneous rallies in the capital’s Shahabag intersection, where seven people, including MSSC President Mehadi Hasan, were detained by the police.

On Saturday, MSSC blamed Imran for mismanagement and misallocation of funds and declared the spokesman unwanted. The faction also blamed Imran for the detention of Mehedi Hasan.

The platform demanded an immediate release of Mehedi Hassan and protested the case lodged against Abir Ghosh, who was claimed as a member of this faction.
