In an unexpected turn of events, Awami League has suddenly doubled the monthly membership fee of its members.
On Sunday, AL President Sheikh Hasina chaired a meeting of the Awami League secretariat where the decision was reached.
Members of the highest echelon in the party, including the president and general secretary, will pay Tk5,000 monthly instead of Tk3,000.
The secretariat members will pay Tk4,000, twice their old Tk2,000 fee.
The Central Working Committee members will be charged Tk3,000, three times the old Tk1,000.
Members of the National Council will be charged Tk500 instead of Tk200.
The advisors are the only group whose monthly membership fee did not surge.
General Secretary Obaidul Quader signed off on the proposal, which states the fee will be retroactive from November 2016.
Quader has also asked for all party members to clear their outstanding retroactive subscription fees for the past nine months before August. This story was first published on Bangla Tribune
