The announcement of result has been postponed for Tangail 8 constituency following violence at one polling centre.
The declaration came at press conference held yesterday at the Tangail district election office in the afternoon.
A total of 2,701 votes were cast in the Ghachua Government Primary School polling centre where voting was postponed because of violence during Tangail 8 by-polls held on Saturday, said Returning Officer Syed Md Khurshid Anwar.
Senior Assistant Secretary of Election Commission Farhad Hossain said the constituency would need re-election as the number of voters at the centre was found higher than the difference between the numbers of votes secured by the two contenders.
Former MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan’s son Anupam bagged 73,565 votes while his nearest contender, Awami League rebel Abdul Malek Mia, got 71,329 votes with the results of one polling centre out of 117 left to be announced.
Nineteen people, including the presiding officer, the assistant presiding officer and the polling officer of the district have been suspended temporarily for not performing duties duly during the polls.
Returning Officer Syed Md Khurshid Anwar said Assistant Returning Officer and district Election Officer Habiba Akhter had been pressurised to declare the results by the Awami League candidate and his supporters on Saturday.
She had filed a general diary with the Tangail Model police station at night on the same day in this regard, he said.
The Tangail 8 parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Awami League MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20.
