Update : 30 Mar 2014, 06:17 PM

Supporters of Tangail 8 Awami League rebel candidate blocked the Dhaka-Sakhipur road in Nalua area of Sakhipur upazila yesterday, demanding suspension of by-polls results and re-polling at 32 centres of the constituency.

Mahbubul Arifin Kamal, younger brother of Awami League rebel candidate Abdul Malek Mia, claimed that supporters of AL-backed candidate Anupam Shahjahan had put seals on ballot papers by force in several polling centres during the by-election on Saturday.

He also alleged that illegal votes were cast at the polling centres after 4pm.

Mahbubul said: “We did not receive any response from the administration though we had complained to them.”

Leaders of local unit Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League who supported the rebel candidate also took part in the blockade.

Vehicle movement from Sakhipur to Dhaka and Sakhipur to Tangail were halted for an hour from 3:30pm.

Later the blockade was withdrawn after the police came to the spot.
