At least two people, who were injured in upazila poll violence in Munshiganj and Khulna on Sunday, succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in the capital yesterday.
Of the deceased, one Lucky Begum, who was injured during a clash between law enforcers and supporters of BNP-backed candidate Abdul Mannan Dewan Mona at Gojaria upazila in Munshiganj during the upazila polls, died while receiving treatment at the capital’s Apollo Hospital on Thursday night, confirmed district Police Superintendent Md Habibur Rahman.
According to sources, the army personnel fired blanks on BNP supporters when they blocked the way of election officials protesting fake vote casting.
“Lucky, wife of the BNP-backed aspirant who was also pregnant, was critically injured after receiving bullet injuries to her abdomen, right thigh and left hand during clash,” Habibur said adding that it was not confirmed whether she was wounded by the shots fired by the Army personnel during the clash.
According to Gajaria Upazila Thana Nirbahi Officer ATM Mahbub, vote casting at the Bauhsia Government Primary School polling centre was suspended after supporters of one of the candidates staffed around 300 ballots after the elections had concluded.
Later, supporters of Abdul Mannan Dewan Mona barricaded the election officials and demanded the result immediately. Soon, the Army intervened and fired few blank rounds to take control of the situation.
At least 15 people, including Lucky, were injured during the clash.
Meanwhile, a Krishak League leader, who sustained bullet injuries during polls violence in Rupsha Upazila on Saturday, also died while receiving treatment at a hospital in the capital yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Selim Patwari, vice-president of Rupsha upazila unit Krishak League.
Police said 11 people, including Selim, were injured during a clash at Rupsha Samantasena Siddiqia polling centre during upazila elections on Saturday.
Selim was first admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital and later shifted to a hospital in Dhaka when his condition deteriorated.
Apart from this, Baluakandi Union Parishad Chairman and Union Awami League president Shamsuddin Prodhan was killed during a clash between the activists of AL backed aspirant and AL rebel candidate Refaetullah Khan Tota at the upazila during the polls.
In addition, another upazila Awami League leader, Mahbubur Rahman Joton, was killed on the same day during a clash between supporters of BNP-backed rebel candidate and AL-backed rebel candidate.
Till now, 15 people have died from violence that occurred during the fourth phase of the upazila polls.
