Death row war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee’s son has emerged victorious as a chairman candidate by a huge margin in yesterday’s polls at the Zianagar Upazila Parishad in Pirojpur.
Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Masud-bin-Sayedee clinched 21,152 votes with pen-and-ink symbol, toppling his nearest contender Awami League-backed Abdul Khalek Gazi, who got only 6,522 votes.
During campaign, Masud sought justice from voters claiming that his father was wronged by the Awami League government. He also highlighted the role of his father, who had been a lawmaker in the area in the past, in developing the upazila.
Local residents said one major reason behind Masud’s success was the organisational weakness of the ruling party in the upazila. Awami League-backed Khalek Gazi, who had been the acting chairman of the upazila, is known as a corrupt person.
BNP leader Ekramul Kabir Maznu was the last chairman of the Zianagar Upazila Parishad. He, however, went out of the scene after being indicted in multiple cases.
