Fakhrul denied bail in murder cases

Update : 23 Mar 2014, 08:29 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected bail prayers of four top BNP leaders including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in connection with three murder cases.

Acting judge of the Dhaka’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Ruhul Amin delivered the bail rejection orders.

The three other leaders are party’s Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain and Abdus Salam.

On March 18, the defence filed a criminal miscellaneous petition for their bail before the court against the bail rejection order of the CMM court.

Ramna police made the leaders accused in three cases – for the killing of a pedestrian by a speeding bus chased by pickets at Malibagh level-crossing on December 1; the killing of a policeman in an arson attack on a bus at Banglamotor on December 24; and a petrol bomb attack on a bus at Paribagh crossing on January 3 that killed several people.

Mirza Fakhrul, Mirza Abbas and Abdus Salam were sent to jail on March 16 after they surrendered before the court.

The same court rejected the bail plea of BNP Standing Committee member Mosharraf in a money laundering case filed by the ACC.

He was sent to jail on March 17 after a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate denied his bail.

On February 10, the High Court granted anticipatory bail to Mosharraf for six weeks but it was cancelled by the Supreme Court on February 24 following an ACC petition.
