Ex-Indian CEC visits Bangladesh

In the run-up to India’s general elections, Dr SY Quraishi, former chief election commissioner of India, is visiting Dhaka for a curtain raiser to the 16th Lok Sabha (General) elections in India scheduled to be held from April 7 to May 12, 2014.

A press release issued from Indian High Commission in Dhaka said this on Wednesday.

The forthcoming elections in India will be the largest democratic exercise in the world with an electorate of 814 million, the release said.

As a former chief election commissioner till as recently as June 2012, Dr Quraishi has experience of how the Indian elections are held and how the office of the Election Commission has evolved to meet the challenges of the world’s largest exercise of universal suffrage.

The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre will hold an open house workshop on “India’s General Elections – 2014” at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Monday.

The workshop will be presided by Advocate Sultana Kamal, executive director, Ain O Salish Kendra.

Ms Sharmeen Murshed, general secretary of BROTEE, will make the opening remarks.

Dr Quraishi will take the audience on a journey through the various aspects of organizing the Indian general elections including the role of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’. 

He will highlight how the numerous parts of a gigantic election machinery are mobilized to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. 

The talk will be followed by a question and answer session.
