SC turns down Azad’s bid for Tangail 8 by-poll

Update : 13 Mar 2014, 05:24 PM

The apex court has ruled rebel Awami League candidate Professor Abu Sayeed Azad ineligible to contest in the Tangail 8 by-election on Thursday.

His supporters in the area have expressed anger on the verdict. They think the verdict has been made to rule out a sure victory of Azad in the by-poll.

“Professor Azad is upset with the ruling and he is speechless,” one supporter Alal said when Dhaka Tribune contacted the professor on his phone.

Earlier, the returning officer ruled Professor Azad ineligible citing reasons that he did not sign in the affidavit provided to the Election Commission.

The chief election commissioner later turned down Azad’s appeals after he took the matter up with the Election Commission. Professor Azad later sought judgment from the Supreme Court.

Previously, Krishak Sramik Janata League founder President Kader Siddiqui was declared ineligible to contest for parliament membership from this constituency.

The Tangail 8 seat fell vacant after death of MP Shawkat Momen on January 20. The by-poll for this constituency will be held on March 29.
