Police yesterday arrested former Gazipur Municipality Jubo League vice-president Shakawat Hossain for beating Joydebpur Railway Junction Station Master Zia Uddin.
The clash erupted over establishment of illegal shops on the railway station land and extortion.
Officer-in-charge of Joydebpur Police Station SM Kamruzzaman said the incident happened on February 25 at the Joydebpur Junction at 7.45pm.
After the incident train services on Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Rajshahi were halted.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Railway Police Dadon Mia said Shakawat ask for money from Zia as the illegal shops in the railway stations were not evicted.
Shakawat along with his three accomplices entered the rail station and charged the station master for illegal use of railway land by establishing shops.
At one stage, three of them beat Zia and left the scene. The culprits also verbally abused Assistant Executive Engineer of railway Siddiqul Alam and Senior Deputy-Assistant Engineer Ashraful Islam as they went to the rescue of the station master.
Later, locals rescued the victim and sent to Gazipur Sadar Hospital.
Officials of the railway station went into fury and after the incident and suspended the train service on two routes protesting the insult. When the report was published in newspapers the Jubo League leader threatened journalists with dire consequence.
When the matter was brought to the notice of police they discussed the matter with Shakawat’s elder brother Mofazzal Hossain, chairman of Jangalia Union Parishad in Kaliganj upazila.
When Shakawat learnt that the matter was brought to the notice of his elder brother he lost his temper and went to Joydebpur Police Station and threatened police. Police arrested him from the spot.
