BNP condemns move to raise electricity tariff

Update : 05 Mar 2014, 04:51 PM

Condemning the Power Development Board’s decision of increasing electricity tariff, the BNP has termed the decision ‘extreme level of indiscrimination’ and warned of waging tough resistance against the decision.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the party, said this in a statement on Wednesday.

“After assuming the office since 2009, price of electricity had been hiked several times and extra burden was put upon the common consumers. Government’s close aids destroyed the power sector looting thousands of crores of taka through rental and quick rental projects,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam.

“The government has been taking one after another anti-people decision ignoring people’s interests as it has completely isolated it from the people.”

The BNP leader alleged that per unit electricity price for irrigation has been hiked 60% to destroy the agriculture, the backbone of economy of the country.

“They (government) have no people mandate that’s why they do not have any accountability to the people,” he said.

Issuing a note of warning, Fakhrul said if the PDB’s proposal was implemented then BNP-led 19-party alliance will wage tough resistance.
