UZ poll to be farcical too, BNP writes EC

Update : 18 Feb 2014, 10:51 AM

The upcoming upazila election would also be farcical like the January 5 poll, the BNP has claimed.

BNP Joint General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the allegation through issuing a letter to the Election Commission on Tuesday, a day before the beginning of the first phase of the four-phase election.

In the letter, the BNP has informed the EC about the ongoing “attacks and harassment” of their party candidates by the “ruling party members.”

While talking to journalists after handing over the letter to the EC, he said: “BNP candidates are being attacked and their houses are also being vandalised by the ruling party members across the country. Moreover, false cases are being filed against them in order to harass them politically.

We have informed the EC about the matter through a letter. The commission will take necessary steps, if it is independent,” he added.

Earlier in the day, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also claimed that the polls would not be fair under the Awami League government.

Out of 487 upazilas of the country, elections to 97 will be held on February 19 and one on February 24 in the first phase, 117 on February 27 in the second phase, and 83 on March 15 in the third phase.

Elections to the remaining 97 will be held on March 23.
