Bail for Ctg BNP leaders extended

Four Chittagong courts yesterday extended the bail periods of several hundred leaders and activists of BNP, including the city unit President Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and General Secretary Shahadat Hossain, in six cases regarding blockade violence.

The bail periods were extended after more than a hundred BNP leaders and activists, including Khasru and Shahadat, appeared before their respective courts and pleaded for an extension. 

The court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mashiur Rahman extended the bail period for 73 of the accused, including Khasru and Shahadat, until February 24. The case relates to an arson attack, and was filed with Kotwali police station on November 28 last year.

In a case with Bandar police station, regarding the killing of a bus driver in a petrol bomb attack in December, the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Farid Alam extended the bail period for 39 BNP leaders and activists, including Khasru, until the submission of the charge sheet. The same court also extended the bail periods for 35 accused individuals, including Khasru, in another case regarding an attack on police, lodged with Akbar Shah police station.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Nure Alam Bhuiyan extended the bail period for 67 BNP leaders and activists until the submission of a charge sheet regarding the killing of an auto-rickshaw driver on November 28, which had been lodged with Chowkbazar police station.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Syed Mashfiqul Islam also extended the bail periods for 53 BNP men in two cases, lodged under the Speedy Trial Act.
