Former ministers, deputy speaker, senior MPs to head JS bodies

At least three former ministers, the deputy speaker of ninth parliament and senior lawmakers are likely to become chairmen of the parliamentary watchdogs set to be formed by Monday.

Former foreign minister Dipu Moni is likely to be made the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on foreign ministry while former home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir head of the public accounts committee.

An ex-primary and mass education minister Afsarul Amin is expected

to be the head of the parliamentary standing committee on education ministry.

Col (retd) Shawkat Ali, then deputy speaker, is likely to be the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on public undertaking.

The Dhaka Tribune has obtained a list of the MPs, set to become chiefs of the standing committees, from the Awami League sources.

“The honourable prime minister and leader of the house is trying to accommodate some former ministers and senior MPs in the standing committees,” ASM Feroz, the chief whip, told the Dhaka Tribune but he declined to confirm the names.

“I hope the committees will be formed on Sunday or Monday,” he said.

Abdul Matin Khasru, who was the chairman of the parliamentary committee on private-member bills and resolutions in the 9th parliament may be elected as the chairman of the committee on estimate.

Kazi Keramat Ali (Rajbari) is likely to be the chairman of the Committee on government assurance. He was the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on cultural affairs ministry.

Pabna’s Mokbul Hossain may become the head of the parliamentary standing committee on agriculture minister while Abdul Wadud (Rajshahi) on food ministry.

Zahid Ahsan Rassel, the former chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on youth and sports ministry, is likely to become chief of the parliamentary standing committee on housing and public works ministry.

Parliamentary standing committee on post and telecommunications ministry is likely to be headed by Imran Ahmed (Sylhet).

Khandker Asaduzzaman and AKM Rahmatullah are likely to retain their posts in the parliamentary standing committees on public administration ministry and information ministry respectively.

Former home minister Major Rafiqul Islam is likely to be the chief of the parliamentary standing committee on shipping ministry and BH Haroon on religious affairs.

Dabirul Islam is set to become the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on jute ministry while Tajul Islam on energy and mineral resources ministry.

Rebecca Momin is set to become the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on women and children affairs ministry. Ekabbar Hossain and RAM Obaidul Muktadir are thought to be the heads of the parliamentary standing committee on railway ministry and local government ministry respectively.

The rules of procedure of parliament has the provisions for the formation of 11 legislative committees. Besides, parliament elects one standing committee for each of the ministries.

Each of the standing committees on the ministries comprises of 10 MPs. The standing committees are for ensuring transparency and accountability of the ministries.

On February 5, the House formed five committees four legislative committees and a parliamentary standing committee on law ministry.

The public accounts committee has 15 members.
