‘It’s time to challenge BNP’

Update : 09 Feb 2014, 09:20 PM

Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday said it was time to challenge the BNP.

The finance minister made the comment while addressing a programme as chief guest, organised by the forum for Secular Bangladesh and Trial of War Criminals of 1971 in remembrance of national professor Kabir Chowdhury’s 92nd birthday.

He also said 2013 was a challenging year and the whole nation had suffered atrocities throughout the year, and added: “The main instigator behind all these atrocities is in a hibernate position and they can resume atrocities at any time.”

The programme was presided over by Prof Muntassir Mamun and Prof Mejbah Kamal, Prof Borhanuddin Khan Jahangir and Prof Shahin Kabir (daughter of Kabir Chowdhury) were among those to deliver addresses at the programme.

The speaker remembered Kabir Chowdhury’s contribution and his bold activities against fundamentalism and communalism.

Kabir Chowdhury played a leading role in many movements in Bangladesh, especially in the anti-communal movement, movement to establish democracy, and significantly in the movement to ensure the trial of war criminals. The great scholar died in December 13, 2011.

Prof Mejbah presented the memorial lecture emphasising some points suggested by Prof Kabir to make a secular Bangladesh and non-communal society.

Prof Shamoly Nasrin, wife of martyr Dr Alim Chowdhury, said: “Communalism had reached every sector of our country, even among our politicians.”
