BNP for old mates, ditches Jamaat in Bogra

Update : 09 Feb 2014, 02:54 PM

Local BNP units of three upazilas in Bogra withdrew their support from key ally Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday, what they said was endorsed centrally.

The BNP has shifted their support to rebel candidates in the district weeks ahead of the upcoming upazila elections throughout the country.

Bogra BNP Organising Secretary Mir Shahe Alam said an announcement was made in this regard in a press conference in the afternoon.

In Dhunat upazila, BNP withdrew their support from Jamaat’s AKM Touhidul Islam and endorsed a rebel candidate Shahjahan Ali.

In Shahjahanpur upazila, they favoured rebel candidate Sarkar Badal and withdrew their support from Jamaat leader and incumbent Chairman Yeasin Ali.

In Sherpur upazila, the BNP turned to support rebel candidate Mahbubur Rahman Hares moving from their previous endorsement of Jamaat leader Dabidar Rahman.

Meanwhile, the local Jamaat had rebutted in an instant reaction to the move.

Bogra Jamaat chief Alamgir Hossain said they will not follow the decision of the BNP and will continue with their candidates in the upazila polls.

The first and second phases of the upazila elections will be held in February 19 and 27 while the third and final phase will be undertaken on March 15.
